The upgrade of the railroad crossing at Palo Parado Road will begin soon. In consequence, the crossing will be closed from January 25 to April 1, according to a traffic alert sign positioned on the road.
Public Works Director Scott Altherr announced the closure in a press release: Press Release - Palo Parado 1-14-09.pdf
Those who use Palo Parado Road will have to detour to Rio Rico Drive six miles to the south.
At times like these Santa Gertrudis Lane could relieve the traffic congestion which will now increase on Pendleton and Rio Rico Drives, but it has been gated for most users for nearly two years in spite of efforts by local residents to open it. see story The Baca Float Coalition is beginning legal action to open the Lane. read about it here
The construction costs for the Palo Parado crossing improvement still exceed the total of the funds raised to pay for them. The public has been asked to contribute to a special trust fund administered by Santa Cruz County. A plea for community support can be read here.
Progress on the fund-raising can be tracked at http://www.co.santa-cruz.az.us/public_works/paloparado/Palo-Parado-Funding-Update.pdf
Other information about the County's plans for Palo can be read here.
